Our STEM/STEAM like projects will include open-ended activities and experiments to increase visual and critical thinking. I will make available a variety of materials to encourage resourcefulness and creativity. Even though I've collected a plethora of recycled materials, there are materials that would be very helpful to have in order to make this project successful. For instance, I added building and engineering materials to the list so I can explore such topics as inclines, ramps, simple machines and different types of forces. I also added picture books, art materials and manipulatives to encourage design, literature, language skills and mathematics. My students will be given an idea or problem to solve and they will practice using the necessary skills to complete the project. Each student will have the opportunity to engage in the activity during their weekly work station time (up to 4 students at a time). Work stations are on a rotating schedule. Students will record their ideas/drawings in their journals and decide whether or not the invention worked and what they might change. I would also like to video tape the students while they are collaborating, communicating and problem-solving so I can share this information with students, parents, colleagues and administration. I believe this project is a valuable resource in order to include more creative, hands-on experiences for my young learners while also increasing their knowledge in other academic areas.
