The students in my classroom struggle with feeling confident in their scientific abilities. The school has a highly transient community and the students often have trouble expressing their capabilities. It is very encouraging for the students to have successful hands-on experiences in science class to ensure their understanding of the standards and provide further motivation to continue learning. The community is a high poverty area and many students do not have positive influences in their lives. Unfortunately, school is not a priority for most of their families as they struggle to make ends meet one day at a time. Often the students are contributing to the household to help keep the family afloat. Students find my classroom to be a safe haven where they can express themselves and learn from each other. The students in my classroom take comfort in the class and begin to share my love of science. They feed off of the excitement and hands-on experiences that they encounter in the class.
