The books that are funded through this project will be added to the classroom library. Each student will have access to these forty-four books throughout the course of the school year. Students will have an opportunity to add these books to their individual book boxes to read during independent reading and conferencing. During this time, students will be able to delve into the lives of important figures such as Barack Obama, Harriet Tubman, and Sonia Sotomayor. Additionally, students will be able to meet and follow characters such as Grace and Peter from Mary Hoffman and Ezra Jack Keats collections, respectively. In order to increase motivation and make reading more engaging, it is essential for all students to be able to see themselves in what they are reading. These forty-four books all feature African American and Hispanic characters or historical figures. In a classroom that is nearly 90% African American, it is vital for students to have access to literature in which they feel represented in. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to provide them with these culturally responsive resources. By doing this, it is my hope that students will continue to believe in themselves as they strive to become stronger readers and more compassionate citizens as they indulge in these new additions to our classroom library.
