I currently have a rug that is many, many years old! It has been passed down from classroom to classroom starting long before the 6 years I have been teaching here. The edging is falling off, and no matter how I keep up with cutting the loose material, the students just can't keep from pulling on it! In addition, it is only big enough for about 15 students comfortably. I would love for my students to have a clean and comfortable place to sit for morning circle, class meetings, partner reading, and the many activities we do every day on the rug. Every day, we start with morning circle in which we focus on social and emotional learning. Our classroom floor is tile, and currently the students sit around the rug because it is not big enough. We spend a large part of our day using the rug for teacher read aloud, students as authors, partner reading, guest readers, and various partner and group activities. I do not believe students should spend the majority of their day in their seats. The rug is definitely the main part of our classroom! My second graders deserve a visually appealing and comfortable place to learn and work with one another! :)
