These materials will make a difference in my classroom, because I can finally hold guided reading lessons with my students. I think literacy for children with autism is an extremely under-researched area with very limited supports, curriculum, and resources. I believe that teaching children with autism to read is possible! Reading instruction for children with autism is successful when using the same strategies that we know are successful with our students: visuals, structure, and routine. I would do guided reading with these books in my classroom when I teach reading. I would have guided reading as a small group reading instruction designed to provide differentiated reading supports. This small group approach is ideal for children with autism because it would allow me to target specific skills and areas of need. Since I am trying to create a desired learning atmosphere as well as individual work schedules for my students this will help me with small groups reading groups.
