Our high school is in a quickly growing rural/suburban area. My students all have learning discrepancies - they are in Special Education. Some struggle with math, many struggle with writing, and all of them struggle with reading. Some of my students enjoy reading, even though it is difficult for them. However, most of my students do not like to read because reading is hard for them, and who wants to do something that is frustrating and hard? Still, like superstars, they read their independent reading books in my room for a total of ninety minutes a week - sometimes more. I also have a great group of advisees, we meet every day before lunch. Sometimes we work on their graduation portfolios, sometimes we play dodgeball or basketball against other advisements. But twice a week we spend twenty minutes reading. The students in our school are fantastic, and I enjoy every single one of them. This year, as an entire staff, we are working to make our classrooms a "text-rich environment" - which means filling our shelves with books, posters, maps, and other items. This also means - especially with my students - creating a comfortable, inviting, and safe place to read. By "safe" I mean a place where they can feel confident and not self-conscious about their developing skills. Classroom chairs and tables aren't a very comfortable place to sit and read; they are hard and cold.
