I will consult with the Special Education Coordinator to determine which scholars are permitted to use particular items on my lists, the appropriate amount of time of use, and when to use them, depending on the individual needs of the scholar. The weighted vests and lap pads may be used during various times of the day, being especially helpful to several scholars during reading and writing activities, due to the deep touch pressure they provide to calm the nervous system. The intent of using the sensory tools is to help scholars increase their attention spans by allowing them to focus more easily and to stay on task. They may also provide scholars the ability to sit properly in their seats, which the wiggle seats will be used for as well. To tackle the fidgeting feet, I will use the the rubber bands for the scholars’ chair legs to allow them the opportunity to release excess energy. Scholars can use their feet to push down/pull up on the rubber bands, twist them, bounce them, or just to rest their feet on. The wiggle feet cushion will also be used to provide scholars with foot movement while seated. The beauty of all these tools is that they can also help reduce anxiety, which unfortunately several of these kiddos come into school with. Another major benefit is that these tools may not only help struggling scholars focus more easily, but their peers as well. Although scholars that frequently fidget do not mean to, they often are an extreme distraction to others and interrupt other's learning in addition to their own. These tools can help eliminate that issue. Providing them to even just a few scholars can have a tremendous impact on the entire class.
