My students attend a city school where there is a high percentage of students with economic disadvantages, a magnet ELL program, a magnet Special Needs program, and a district and city that does not yet truly value educating its young population. My students are enrolled in the READ 180 program, but getting them to read a book is like pulling teeth. They have had comprehension issues for so long, they have learned to refuse or keep trading one book for another. They often act up in other classes to get out of reading the text or reading aloud. My students, however, are just afraid to try in front of others. As they practice in my class, they gain confidence to read, and gain comprehension skills. The Nook is a great motivator for students who have shown they are making efforts to improve their reading level. Ultimately, I would love to have 6 Nooks, but two will work- it will be the hot item everyone wants to use!
