The students I work with are primarily from lower income, single parent families. They often have to deal with some heavy life experiences and as such, the social and emotional needs of these children are high. These students may be 4-5 years old, but the language they use and choice of hobbies is often closer to that of a teenager. These children are trained well in the ways of their neighborhood. I also find, that among many of the families of my students, school is viewed as an unpleasant thing, and teachers are thought of to be controlling and mean. These issues manifest themselves in numerous ways with my students. I have two main goals as an educator of this population. First is to help enable students to be prepared to deal with the social and emotional aspects of their world. Second, is to help each child foster a love of learning. A love that comes from interest and intrinsic motivation.
