We are a community school serving many children who struggle with poverty. About 10 percent of our students are in temporary housing, meaning they are living in shelters throughout the city or temporarily with family members in crowded apartments. Every time we get a family who enters temporary housing we come across the same problem: they are in need of school uniforms and school supplies. Parents become overwhelmed trying to secure housing for their families, sending their children to school regularly, and then making sure their children are prepared for school daily. As a community school, we try to alleviate these obstacles as much as we can so that the students can be better able to focus on their academic careers. We are hoping that Donors Choose will be a platform to help us do that, as our parents simply cannot always afford the bare essentials. By providing uniforms and basic school supplies to students in temporary housing, they will be well prepared to learn and will have the confidence they need to succeed in school. Uniforms are a great way to take away the competition of who has the most expensive or newest clothes, which can be hard for students in temporary housing.
