The gentlemen are nearly all children of immigrants from countries as wide ranging as Bangladesh, Egypt, Mexico, Columbia, Romania, and Nepal, to name just a few. As urban students, they've been lucky to be in safe and calm classrooms for their elementary schools but have often missed out on the chance to learn the kinds of invention, innovation, experimentation, and critical play that is so important to 21st Century citizens. The gentlemen are, like many and most 13 year old boys, curious, collaborative, and, as it happens, rowdy and playful. Most of them have enormously inquisitive sides that they engage with at home in sandbox video games like Minecraft, but have yet to fire those skills in creative ways at school. The students in our school are more than 80% Title I, meaning they receive free meals during the day for living below the poverty line.
