My middle school Reading and Language Arts students are rural Illinois kids. Many of them have not been out of the state and even past the nearest city. They are hard working and mostly enjoy coming to school. Since I am the only ELA teacher in our junior high building, I have the pleasure of seeing my students grow from 6th graders who are quiet and unsure about middle school to 8th graders who are full of excitement to move on to high school. The one thing that is lacking in most homes here is books. Books are not seen as entertainment or as a necessity to one's life. This circumstance doesn't build a love for reading. My classroom is text-rich with books of all genres in my bookshelves. It is a struggle to continue filling these shelves with quality books. If I do not purchase them with my own money, books don't get added to my library. I know the value of reading so I do it but it's difficult.
