There are many students in our school that experience meltdowns throughout the day, reactions to past traumatic experiences that they cannot yet control. A change in an environment often helps them to calm down and then get back to the business of learning, but even more so when that environment provides a therapeutic experience where they can feel safe to express themselves and learn from their uncontrolled moment. The materials I am asking for will help me to provide an environment for them that is away from the fluorescent lights of the classroom, where aromas known to calm and clear the mind are steaming through a diffuser, and they can find a comfortable place to sit and talk to their counselor, out of the hard plastic chairs they're required to sit in all day. Today's kids are in need of so much more instruction than that which can be provided in reading and math classes. They need spaces where they can learn to express themselves emotionally, talk about their trauma, and heal. The materials I am requesting will help me create that space for them.
