The students in my first grade classroom are all becoming bi-literate in Spanish and English. While in my classroom, students read solely in Spanish, whether through whole class instruction, in a small group, with a partner, or independently. The students crave reading different books on various topics, but they need a place to individually store the titles they have self-selected from our Spanish classroom library, and they need an easy way to transport books back and forth from school to home. Students currently have a reading bin to hold their books, but with a total of 48 students in and out of the Spanish classroom, space is limited and the bins are breaking. The book bags will allow for students to securely store their books and place their book bags next to their reading partner's bag when the books are not in use. Additionally, these bags make it easier for students to bring their favorite Spanish texts home to read and practice at night with their families which only increases their success in becoming biliterate.
