My students learn best when they feel calm, experience low anxiety, with the ability to stay focused and concentrate on curriculum tasks. These weighted vests will assist students with autism spectrum disorder in achieving this. Our autism classroom has a great need for supports in adaptive behavior and social/emotional supports. All of my students with autism spectrum disorder experience heightened levels of stimulation from their environment. The pandemic has added stress on their families; illness within their families and themselves; change in school & daily routines; and lack of in-person academic instruction and therapy services. The sudden disruption and social isolation of the pandemic has had a unique impact on students with special needs, especially students with autism. They often come into the classroom with heightened levels of anxiety starting at home which continues with not knowing what changes will affect their daily routine at school. These factors added to the typical stress and environmental anxiety causing factors they already face only increases their anxiety levels even more. Weighted vests are recommended by therapists, researchers, and teachers to assist students with autism spectrum disorder with self-regulation and reducing anxiety while increasing calm. These vests would be used for my students in my classroom to wear as needed, or even as soon as entering the classroom and throughout their school day to assist with self-regulation. The reduced stress and increased calm would help them to better navigate through their school and improve academic and social opportunities.
