Every child should have quality literature at their fingertips. As teachers, we can develop a passion for reading at school, and students will develop a love and interest in reading independently. Reading opens up a whole new world of exploration, adventure, and excitement when children are given the opportunity to become enthusiastic readers. As a first-year teacher, I believe it is important to provide access to books and build a love for reading. However, my bookshelf is currently bare. I would like to encourage my students to read books which include themes of friendship like in Walking Miss Millie, characters with disabilities such as Iris in Song for A Whale, and have strong female leads, such as Lucy in The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl. My goal is to grow and develop lifelong readers and learners. Having a classroom library filled with quality multicultural books will ensure that every student can succeed.
