Children learn to read by reading at instructional levels. Our most emergent readers need books that have strong picture support, large spaces between words, specific line placement, and emphasis on high-frequency words. The look in a five year old's eyes when they read an emergent book by themselves is priceless. However, kindergarten children need to read many of these before they are ready to move through the instructional levels. I teach at a school with 90 kindergarten and 90 first grade students. The Kindergarten and First grade teachers are all trying to share the same packs of leveled books, as well as letting the students read them daily for fluency practice. By donating to my project, you will help the youngest learners have books they can ACTUALLY read in their hands. Parents do not have access to these books. Libraries and retail stores have "Beginning Readers," but these books are not truly at beginner levels. I have seen children improve their reading skills significantly by reading multiple texts at their level. To get better at reading- you need to PRACTICE reading.
