In my many years of teaching, I had never experienced such enthusiasm, excitement and joy from children. Nor had I ever seen children work as hard or be so committed to their task. The children had to build a robot from Lego parts and then program it using coding to complete challenges. Some of the challenges involved repairing bridges, retrieving space junk, and navigating around off shore drilling to protect the environment. All challenges were based on current environmental issues. The children became expert problem solvers, engineers, and computer programmers. The robotics club met once a week after school. Soon enough the children were asking to come in at recess to do research, program, and make adjustments to their robots. All of our club was able to attend the All Earth Robotics Challenge Competition last May. Students have already asked when the robotics club will start this school year. With a few more kits, more students can participate.
