My students are freshmen, navigating their way through their first year of high school in a large suburban high school (1500+ students) in a small suburban school district (one high school). One of the adjustments to high school is the amount of writing they are expected to do. In my humanities classes (English/social studies block), students are expected to write several essays throughout the year. Some are short literature responses, others are multi-page research papers. Computers (for research and composition) are a basic tool needed to complete these essays. However, my small school district does not have the technology my students need. I have one student computer in my classroom. There are computer labs at my school, but they are insufficient (roughly 1 computer per 300 students) and outdated (most student computers run XP and have floppy disk drives). A few students bring their own computers from home, but many don't feel comfortable or can't afford to do so.
