I teach 7th and 8th grade language arts to a student population in which over 50% are identified through Title I funding as low income. These hardworking individuals deserve to have a learning environment that is inviting as well as meets their individual needs. My students need a space in the classroom where they can comfortably work and take risks away from the distraction of the rest of the class. Right now my "small groups" are taking place around a folding table that only allows space for two students and a teacher to collaborate while learning. With the use of a "U" shaped table I would have the opportunity to gather with four students at one time in close proximity. This table will place me in the center of the group and allow me to work freely and comfortably with each student. This powerful tool helps me to easily confer with my students, listen to them read, as well as monitor and assess their work. It would also allow for student groups to foster independence. When a group leader is designated to lead the group they have a special place at the table to sit that helps them to create a successful learning experience for everyone. This table would really help create a more successful and functional classroom environment. My students would be so excited to have a comfortable, distraction free place in the classroom where they can get some additional instruction from the teacher.
