Although our community did not experience the level of devastation many other Houston area communities did, we did experience flooding, power outages, and displacement due to tornado damage. When we came back to school, although our students did share their stories about this trauma, they still came back with smiles on their faces and an excitement and eagerness to get back into the swing of learning. However, the challenge for many of them continues to be coping skills because they are still dealing with being displaced, living in homes that are still damaged, or living with the emotions that a traumatic event like a hurricane brings. The supplies I am requesting such as the kinetic sand, the stuffed animals, the squishies, and the stress balls will be used in a cool down room that the students will be able to go to when they become upset. Some of the squishies and stress balls, as wells as the chair bands, will be given to the teachers to use in the classrooms so that they can deescalate some of the behavior before it gets to an unhealthy level so that the student(s) do not disrupt the classroom. My main goals for this project and for these materials are to help our students learn to self-regulate and recover from the trauma of experiencing a life-changing event such as Hurricane Harvey. This room will be used to allow the students to calm down, regroup, refocus and go back to class so that they can get back on track without disrupting the learning environment. If I can help them move forward then everyone---the student who is experiencing the issue, the other students in the class, the teachers, and the entire school, will learn and grow exponentially.
