Imagine never leaving your hometown. Being limited by financial resources is a real issue for my students, but they CAN escape & prepare for life through reading. Whether reading fiction or "How To" guides, giving students the world at their fingertips can inspire them to see beyond this small town & accomplish amazing things. Today, reading is not a top priority with the popularity of social media and technology, but there is still high value in finding the right book to ignite the spirit of reading within all students. I would love to add more books and resources to my 12th grade English classroom to help students prepare for their futures, as well as giving them a chance to go to another world without having to leave the comfort of my classroom or their homes. Three to four days a week, students are able to choose their own independent reading materials to read at the beginning of class for 10-15 minutes. Reading helps students improve their writing craft, as well as increase their vocabulary. Being able to read and write effectively are skills important in every aspect of our modern world. Reading is one way of helping students obtain life skills that extend far beyond the classroom & giving them more options would greatly help me help them.
