There are eleven Title 1 elementary schools through the city of Portsmouth, VA out of thirteen total. 76% of the students receive free or reduced price lunches. Commonly, students don'€™t have computers and the only exposure they have to modern technology is what they see on T.V. or the resources that are available in their respective school. Specifically, I work with students in 5th and 6th grade reading. Over the past year, they experienced a 22% drop in their high-stakes state mandated testing due to curriculum updates, testing format changing from paper/pencil to computers, and technology-enhanced items added to the test. While our school system does have access to an average of five Promethean Boards in each school, students typically interact with this in whole groups. Research has shown, however, that students learn and retain more in small groups. I pull small groups of students weekly in each school to focus on those with the greatest learning needs.
