According to researcher Matthew T. Mahar, "Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially." This year, I want to bring flexible seating into my classroom. We spend a majority of the day completing work in core subjects. With the amount of work required in Kindergarten, sometimes it is hard for them to pay attention and remain on task. So I want to create an atmosphere of movement and choice. With your help, my Kindergarten students will use these seating options to improve their concentration and on-task behavior. The wobble chairs, cushion mats, lap trays, and colorful stools will provide a comfortable atmosphere for working. Students can use the wobble chairs to move while they work, or grab a cushion mat and lap tray and choose a quiet floor spot to work in peace. The colorful, backless stools promote core strength and flexibility of movement. Each day, students will choose a seating spot from a choice board. Flexible seating is not only comfortable, but it allows for children to make good, responsible choices about their work space.
