We need these books! I read this book in a day. I finished it yesterday and have told as many people as I can about the AWESOMENESS of this book. Gratz, you are a genius. I cannot stop talking about the book and the students in my class must read it. The way the stories are woven together, the emotions that the characters make you feel deep in your soul---it all just truly leaves you speechless, but at the same time ready to fight for what is right! It is appropriate for my students' level of reading and will create a platform for discussions that MUST BE HAD by the youth of America. The book highlights family, choices, laws, history, discrimination, honesty, betrayal, and HOPE! Many of my students are refugees or have family history of discrimination that they can explore and share in our discussions. It will help them to discover who they are, what their family has fought against, and what to stand up for as they grow into young adults. As a class we would study the history of each character (refuge from Nazi Germany, Fidel Castro's reign in Cuba, and the current situation in Syria). We will make connections with what is happening in the news on a daily basis and study the history of my students trials and tribulations-- some very similar to the characters in this book. The excitement I have for this book must be shared with my students! Please, please, please help us!!
