As my second year teaching has come to a close and next year is in sight, I have done a lot of thinking, researching, and digging on how to additionally improve student success within the classroom. What I found was that Flexible Seating/Alternative Seating in the classroom is a great way to provide students with choice, provide them comfort and responsibility in their learning and learning area, and can help decrease behavioral issues. Since day one of my educational career, the most important part was providing a loving, caring, and comfortable culture within the classroom, for comfort in the classroom leads to increased student engagement. Providing alternative seating options, including stability balls and wobble stools, will allow students to take responsibility in where they want to sit, help them determine what helps them focus more on their academic work, and provide choice. Additionally, student behaviors, which in the school I teach at are prevalent, would decrease, for students will be able to choose where and how they sit, taking responsibility for their own academic and behavioral success. When thinking of students who struggle with attention, having seating options that allow them to move (stability balls, wobble chairs) can help increase their focus and attention. I would love to be the initiator of change in the classroom for my students' overall success. Having alternative seating options within the classroom will provide the change necessary to transform the academic and behavioral life of my future students.
