My students recently escaped from the 1950s. Over the holidays, we got a brand new building after having been subjected to learning in a "time warped" building that had been around since Eisenhower was president for all of their elementary school careers. Unfortunately, while our surroundings have changed, many forms of technology are still catching up from our not-so-distant past. While our projectors and desktop computers have made the leap, students are still lacking the "extra" technology gadgets to propel them into the 21st century and really facilitate new and innovative learning experiences. My students are all from low-income households and most live in Section 8 housing. Few have the luxury of picking up a tablet to read the latest Wimpy Kid adventure or to look up what kind of bird was sitting on the window sill with merely the swipe of a screen.
