My students eat breakfast and lunch at school because over 70% of them are on the free or reduced lunch program. Many of their parents are incarcerated or they are being raised by a grandparent or family member. They ride the bus to school and often tell me how they wish they could see an ocean. These students have limited resources and have limited knowledge about their community so the 4th grade lessons about explorers are hard for them to grasp. My students need to be able to travel from Algood to Asia in their minds and understand the cultural differences, geography, time changes, values and differences between the explorers and themselves.
