I used every issue of my last Scholastic magazine subscription to the fullest extent. The articles are of high interest for my students so it takes the chore out of working on reading comprehension and skills such as opinion writing, narrative writing, discerning fact from opinion, constructing an argument, and vocabulary building. I used the online pieces as a supplement to our curriculum and due to the high engagement with the online game and videos, my students really retained what they learned and could apply that knowledge to future assignments. We had a very engaging debate about whether students should be allowed to go into stores to purchase candy by themselves or with a parent. This was a direct result of one of the scholastic magazine articles we read combined with a lesson that is part of our school’s curriculum. Another thing my students need is access to fresh water. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, students can’t use the drinking fountains at school any longer. I have already purchased pencil pouches, binders, composition books, rulers, colored pencils, sharpeners, and glue sticks for each of my students with my own personal money. I’m asking for some help with water and a class subscription to Scholastic News.
