I want to create a student centered classroom in which I give my kiddos the opportunity to choose which learning area works best for them. I'll do away with individual desks and arrange the classroom into cooperative learning groups that seat four students to a group. At each group there will be a different seating options for the students to choose from; a group with stools, yoga balls, a raised table for those kiddos who prefer to stand and a lowered table with pillows for those who'd prefer to sit. I plan to have students self-select their "learning zone" with the option to move at any time they feel their needs would be best suited in another spot. Incorporating flexible seating into my classroom will increase my students self-awareness and ability to identify their learning environment "sweet spot". Finding a learning zone that is comfortable and works for their learning style can lead to increased student engagement and a developed sense of autonomy. Creating groups of similar seating options that allow my students to work together also increases their opportunities for collaboration. This promotes engagement, participation, and encourages the engagement of academic discourse, exceptionally important for my multilingual learners! In addition to providing seating options (stools, bean bag chairs, yoga balls), support for this project will also provide the students with resources to house their classwork such as bins, and drawer systems. To a group of students who rarely get a say in the structure and flow of their day, a bit of choice goes a long way. I am hoping this grant will enable me to make an active and student centered classroom a reality for them.
