Our 4th grade students are from a collaborative classroom, combining children with special needs, English Language Learners, and students who attend Academic Enrichment in the same classroom. We have a very high ESL population and many students are considered low income based on state guidelines. However, they love learning about science because both the classroom teacher and I (the special education teacher that works with the whole class) love science and love to pass our love of science on to the children. We teach as many possible lessons through hands on experiments or by making them as kinesthetic and tactile as possible so that we can engage the students in meaningful activities that reach all of their learning styles. We also teach as many of the key vocabulary words in other languages including Spanish, Urdu, and Punjabi to help the students make connections in both English and their native language.
