Implementing Flexible Seating into my classrooms gives my students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them. Stability boards and balls will encourage my students to stay focused during independent and collaborative work. Wobble chairs and cushions will allow students to move around the classroom to communicate and engage in critical thinking. Creating a classroom space to meet the individual needs of my students will impact how they learn and interact with each other. Allowing my students more opportunity to move will offer them more opportunity to focus on learning. Students who are given the freedom to wiggle, wobble, bounce and discuss will stay on task for longer periods of time than those who sit in the same chair all day. Allowing students in my classroom to choose their own "smart seat" where they can be safe, focus and work promotes a sense of ownership for their learning. Giving my second graders opportunities to sit on the floor cushions, stand on a balance boards around a tall table, gather in a circle with their peers on stability balls encourages exploration and keeps my students actively engaged. Having exercise balls, wiggle cushions, stability boards and wobble stools as seating options in the classroom creates a child friendly space where kids can be kids while they learn.
