Flexible seating in the classroom is very important to my first graders. They choose their learning spot and get ready to build their brain power! With flexible seating now my students are choosing to sit at tables, under tables and in other areas in my classroom during station, work and assessment time. This has been a great motivational incentive in my classroom because "Rebel Role Models" are allowed to pick their seat option. Behavior has greatly improved since implementing flexible seating. The kids are cognizant of the place they choose and the friends they choose to sit beside. I love seeing them make positive choices that do not need any teacher direction. My students are focused, staying on task and behaving during independent work time in their flexible seat choices. Every group has students who love to wiggle, and a standard chair or desk is not always the best option for them. I started using flexible seating when my daughter was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome and ADHD. She showed me that different students learn in many different ways, not just the traditional ones. My classroom tables are different heights and offer different seating options. These seating choices allow movement while working, are durable and easy to move around our classroom. It's amazing to see my students staying on task and learning all while standing, sitting, and moving in their most comfortable learning spot in the classroom!
