We are living in an age of technology; yet, my students are currently left in the dark when it comes to technology in the classroom. While many schools in surrounding districts have classrooms supplied with interactive whiteboards, our school district's limited funding can only support interactive whiteboards in math classes. Sadly, my students are the ones who lose because of this. They are engaged and enjoy learning. We are studying the world with out of date maps that have seen better days. I work with an excellent group of students. Many have expressed a deep desire to learn about people and places in the world; yet, I feel like limited in accomplishing this without visuals. I found that my 6th grade class is made up primarily of visual learners. I know they would love having an interactive whiteboard where they can see places in the world, collaborate on research presentations, and interact with Google Earth. These students deserve to have Social Studies brought to life.
