Our students attend a culturally diverse elementary school in a small city in central New York. Students are involved in music, drama, the arts and sports, some travel the world and may speak one of 30 different languages at home. However, a significant number of students lack exposure to museums, travel or even books at home. A large number of our students are struggling readers. Many of these students are learning English as a second language. Other students arrive at our school in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade reading significantly below grade level, having attended several schools in earlier years. Most struggling readers are also among the 75% of our students living in poverty. Students are excited to learn but need reading and cultural experiences to build upon.
