My project encourages and allows students to make choices that support healthy activity, socialization and leadership skills. Through this independent decision-making process, they will have the opportunity to choose a game or equipment, i.e., balls, jump ropes, tether balls frisbees that meets their needs while developing interactive skills and physical activity. Volunteer students will monitor the checking out of the games and equipment giving them an opportunity to enhance leadership skills. They will also learn conflict resolutions skills during a two-hour workshop. As previously noted, my school has 68% of socioeconomically disadvantaged students who do not always have families who can afford extras. Currently, students do not have equipment or games available to them at lunch playtime unless they bring something from home. As a result, they become bored finding rocks to kick or sticks to play with. Both of these items can be dangerous and are not allowed for play. Having students active during free time also encourages them to burn off energy with the goal of supporting concentration during class. The balls, Hop and Skip Ankle Hoops and frisbees listed below will help ensure that students have safe supplies to play with. This will create a safer field environment and an overall safer school environment for the students. With your donation, we are working on creating an ideal cooperative play environment for students to work on healthy social development. Having sports equipment provided by the school show the students that they are cared about and valued by the school. This also gives them clear directions about how to spend their unstructured time creating healthy habits they will be using in future grades.
