My goal as a teacher is to foster a positive learning environment. I want students to become lifelong learners. I feel very comfortable getting kids to a place where they love reading and writing. However, I do need a little support in getting these kids to enjoy math. I am hoping to set aside time on Fridays to have exploratory time where they can use math skills in fun and engaging ways. I can't think of a better activity for 12 year-olds then allowing them time to play math games with their peers. I am also planning on using some of the resources such as Dominoes, decks of cards and plastic chips to teach hands-on lessons about ratios, proportions, fractions and decimals. Games such as Gravity Maze and ITRAX will be a hit with studnets who love STEM. Dr. Eureka and the Polka Dot Game will increase player's spatial reasoning skills. I would love for my students to leave 6th grade saying, "My favorite subject is MATH!" If I can help nurture positive mindsets about math, I am confident my students will gain not only the skills, but also the confidence to tackle math in Junior High. Playing these board games will also foster much needed math and problem solving conversations. Providing math games such as Blokus, Qwirkle, and Prime Climb will help me to create a safe and engaging environment where students can work cooperatively with a variety of peers with whom they may not usually play with at recess. If this project gets funded, we will be creating mathematicians and an environment for positive friendships at the same time! Thank you for considering donating to my classroom. We appreciate your generosity very much!
