My students are African American and Hispanic students who live in a high poverty neighborhood in Dallas. The neighborhood is also drug and crime infested. Over 90% of students in the school get free lunch. Most of the students live in multiple family housing and basic needs are limited. They are GREAT students who have to have the world come to them inside the classroom due to poverty and a lack of resources. Many come to school hungry and dirty. School for most of them is the only stable and clean environment. It should also be comfortable. They complain of cold and dirty floors,and their knees hurting from the hard bare floor. This does not stop them from sitting on the floor because they love sitting next to each other. Once their clothes get dirty from sitting on the floor, they must wear the same clothes for days because they do not have a washer machine at home. The students have asked to bring towels to sit on, but since they only have a few they must share with their family.
