I teach students with autism in a self-contained setting. They have significant sensory needs and often require behavioral support to manage those needs. I am creating a "Crash Pad" for them, a semi-private corner of our room where they can go if they are under- or overstimulated and need to adjust before returning to their work. This corner includes items to distract from or provide stimulation for all five senses: taste (chewies, sour candies), touch (fidgets), sound (noise-cancelling headphones, music), vision (liquid motion bubblers, light covers), smell (separate space away from smells), and deep pressure touch. In addition to this, we have floor mats to create a safe space for students with behavioral outbursts. We already have two large bean bags students can kick/punch/snuggle/jump onto. We also intend to cut the chewies into small strips so that we have 32 different items students can use without sharing with others. We also already have twinkle lights with an on/off switch to create a different atmosphere and a curtain to provide some privacy from other students while allowing staff to supervise for safety.
