All 30 of my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch, which is one way to describe their situations. Thirty percent of these students have intellectual, physical, or Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs). My students are from a low-income section of Philadelphia where having the basic supplies to attend school is a challenge. Many of these students have multiple siblings who also require basic supplies. School and attendance are not a priority to their daily survival. Many of them have seen and experienced way too much for their young lives. The negative energy that comes from uncertainty, violence, frequent moving to new schools and home situations can result in increased stress. The stress of poverty can leave kids feeling helpless and cause them to react inappropriately to their daily stresses.
