Jerome is located in a rural community that is becoming more urban every day. The majority of the students that I see in the agricultural department live in town and have never lived or worked on a farm regardless of the fact that agriculture, specifically dairy and dairy foods, is the leading industry in our community. Approximately 27% of our students' families are below the poverty level and less than half will go on to graduate from college. My students enroll in my classes because they know that my classes are filled with engaging activities that will relate to any field that they choose after high school. To quote one of my students, "Everything that I am being taught (in science) I learned in my Ag class first." I also have students enrolled in Dairy Foods Manufacturing who will never take a higher level science course including chemistry from a general science teacher. They choose agricultural courses because it is a different type of learning to which they can relate.
