Flexible seating allows students to choose a way to learn which suits their personal style. Not all students learn the same, thus it stands to reason not all students want to sit in a traditional school desk and chair. Allowing my students the independence to decide where and how they want to sit will increase their engagement while decreasing distractions due to fidgeting behaviors. At this time, traditional desks and chairs is all we have so we have improvised and done our best. We have worked on math while laying in the floor, sitting atop our desks, standing on one leg, and laying under our desks. These items will provide the flexibility in my classroom to allow my students to express themselves and assert their independence. We are in a rural county in Eastern Tennessee and do not always have the funds to make things happen in the classroom. Seeing their faces when they will have a place to sit other than the floor, when they just aren't feeling their desk, would be the greatest gift and I know it would drastically improve our spirits!
