One of the greatest challenges my 6th grade students face is that the incredible pressure of meeting standards on annual state tests is creating incredible resistance to reading in the students who need to be reading the most. An increased focus on test scores has prevented many of my students from discovering books that they truly love--books that will allow them to develop a lifelong love of reading. My students are passionate, inquisitive, and joyful; however, the majority of my students entered our school, on average, at least three years below grade-level in reading last year, hindering their love for reading. In addition to focusing on teaching crucial skills that will allow my students to succeed on our state tests, I am working to cultivate an independent love of reading within each of my students this year, a love of literacy that they can carry with them to and through college.
