Instruments provide a hands-on approach to learning about music. With my proposal, each student will have access to a ukulele during their music class and will learn the proper way to tune, play, and read ukulele music. The skills that the ukulele requires of the student have the opportunity for benefit beyond the music classroom. Playing the ukulele teaches coordination and listening skills, as well as gross and fine motor skills. A one-to-one instrument set up may be the way to reach students who do not typically thrive in the traditional classroom setting, or a way for students to begin discovering their passions. Our school uses a music curriculum that has lessons, guides, and instructions for teaching the ukulele already built into its 5th grade course guide. The key topics regarding the ukulele include accompanying oneself and others, chord structure, and the beginnings of song composition. With lessons already in place, adding the ukulele will be a seamless transition in our 5th grade music curriculum.
