Being in the first year of teaching in my current school, I noticed that most of the percussion equipment was sadly in very poor shape. We were able to convince the local booster club to fund a set of gently used timpani, however, a need of a suspended bass drum and stand is urgent, considering this piece of equipment is crucial in helping the band keep time. A proper suspended bass drum and stand improves the sound of the instrument and prevents the instrument from falling of the stand. Currently, our bass drum is balanced by a wobbly, metal frame. If it is struck too hard by a player, it could easily find itself on the floor and knocking over other percussion equipment - such a cymbals on stands. Also - and I have never seen this in 32 years of teaching - we cannot change the heads of the drum without destroying it since the clamps securing the drum head and hoops are NAILED on, the screw tuning keys are 90% missing! With this suspension stand, the drum hangs freely from a web of rubber mounting bands, allowing the sound to project easily and fully without it falling to the floor. The stand will help us transport the drum to and from the performance area while protecting the instrument and nearby students too. The new drum would allow us to change heads when necessary without having to tape the drum heads. When the bass drum is properly suspended and tilted, a beautiful deep bass sound can be lifted out of the drum towards the audience rather than towards the players sitting in front of it. This will allow the percussionists to produce a superior sound while learning proper bass drum technique.
