Blind date with a book is used to encourage my students not to judge a book by it's cover, but rather decide whether to read the book based on what it's about. I pick a theme and use butcher paper to wrap the books up like little presents. I'll write details about the book on the paper which include quotes, themes, setting, and sometimes a little doodle or two to get the kids interested! The theme I want to use next month is "non-white authors". Most of our state required reading was written by white men - about white men. And I'm not saying the classics aren't valuable or enjoyable, but I believe it is important for our students to see representations of themselves in stories. With the majority of our student body being non-white, I wanted to provide stories that they will want to read in their free time.
