In light of recent world events, I have spent time reflecting on the texts I have chosen to share with my students in the past. Although many of the books my students and I know and love are high quality and engaging, I realized they are not very diverse when it comes to narratives written by and about people of color and other marginalized populations. This year, I am determined to provide texts that contain characters that look like my students, or that expand their idea of what people look like. Inclusive and diverse texts will help me strengthen our classroom community, the school family we work so hard to build from day one. I want the literature I choose to share with students to be relevant to their daily lives and act as a mirror to see themselves and their families, or as vehicles to build empathy for people who are different from them. I have researched and compiled a list of books that will help me broaden the stories and experiences I get to share with my students. I would be so happy to have any of these books in my classroom library to share with my students. Thank you for your consideration. I wish you well!
