A diverse group of students means that reading levels vary widely. My goal, as part of implementing a balanced literacy program, is to ensure that my students have independent reading books that best meet their needs. In my 4th grade classroom, I have students just learning phonics and decoding, and identified G.A.T.E. students who are reading well beyond their grade level. I am hoping to create a library that is appealing to all students in my class, regardless of their reading level. Not only do they need leveled books, but books that are of high interest to keep them reading.
