My project aims to supply my students with accessories to promote fine motor development, self-care independence, sensory regulation, and social-emotional expansion. My students work very hard to overcome a multitude of barriers that prevent them from being able to independently access their school environment. The students I most commonly work with identify with day-to-day challenges as a result of being diagnosed with overall developmental delays, genetic disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, musculoskeletal defects, and other varying diagnoses. By donating to my project, not only will you help to improve my student's ability to identify themselves as being able bodied and independent despite their set backs, you will ultimately help to instill a sense of confidence that will impact them for the rest of their lives. As an example, my students often struggle with not being able to produce enough muscle strength or control in order to adequately use a writing utensil for written work or manipulate the fasteners on their pants while performing self care tasks in the bathroom. The use of intricate games, hand weights, resistive putty, and pencil grips can be beneficial for promoting the development of my students fine motor skills and self care independence. Other items that I have selected (crash pad, sensory brushes, compression vests, etc.) will be used to help regulate my students sensory systems, which is ultimately a means of maintaining an appropriate level of alertness in order to respond appropriately within their school environment.
