It is well known that students with Autism are often visual learners that enjoy art. In my class, we use tissue paper and glue, watercolors, markers, and a variety of paper to show understanding of a reading passage, illustrate math principles, and create writing prompts based on their own drawings. At the beginning of the year, the classroom looks quite bare. But by the end of the year, the students are so happy about what they have produced that the classroom looks like an art gallery! They are very proud of what they have done to make the classroom theirs. Through hands-on color therapy, my students can use art materials to express themselves, make connections with the world around them, and show who they are through art. Please help my students be all they can be by supplying them with the means to demonstrate their talents. Art is a wonderful way for students to regulate their emotions and to find different ways to relate to others.
